Life Is A Highway

I recently learned how to drive, and during lessons my instructor repeatedly warned me that I needed to focus my eyes on the direction I wanted to go. She told me that if I started looking at the side of the road, or at the oncoming traffic, I would surely end up colliding with it. So I had to learn to quieten my fears and to fix my gaze on where I was aiming for, rather than focusing on all the things I wanted to avoid.

Increasingly I am realizing that my life’s success is entirely bound up in how well I manage to do this in my thought life. My spiritual, interpersonal, and professional success rests solely on how disciplined I am in stopping my thoughts from being monopolized by enactments of every possible and dire thing that could possibly happen. I have to single mindedly focus on the truth of God’s promises. It’s a daily battle, and the battlefield is my mind.

With my tongue I have the power to bless or to curse my life, I have the power to open heaven’s floodgates of provision over a situation, or to give the enemy a legal right to kill, steal, and destroy. I can speak God’s perfect will into being, or I can come into allegiance with hell’s desire to devastate my life. And with my thoughts I can dwell on the truth that God is good, that He calls me His daughter, and that He cares more for me than I could ever fathom, or I can allow deception to take root and fear to overcome.

The enemy has only one trick – he lies. If he can get me to focus for just long enough on driving off the road, I probably will. So I am determined to keep my eyes fixed steadily on the goal.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1)
